Each season, 6 to 9 food truck teams enter the race and have to cook, sell, and adapt to different challenges to raise $50,000 (and sometimes their own food truck) to win. it won’t work. Each week, when traveling a particular region or route, the least profitable kitchen trucks are eliminated and sent home, while the remaining kitchen trucks move on to the next town.
Usually at the start of each episode, you receive “seed money” to be used for grocery shopping. Teams are given different challenges each week for a chance to earn more money (usually by selling most of their specialties or making versions of local delicacies for Tyler and the guest judges). We also face obstacles that prevent us from selling normally (e.g., changing our menu to vegan food, not being able to replenish our supplies for the day, etc.).
In the first two seasons of the show, participants were experienced professional food truck operators who competed for prize money (the first season costing $50,000, the second season costing $100,000). In subsequent seasons (with the exception of Season 6), food trucks were made available to newcomers (from home cooks to former restaurateurs) who dreamed of owning and running their own food trucks.
In Seasons 3, 4, and 5, the winning team received cash prizes and was able to keep the food trucks provided by the show. Beginning with Season 6, the show again awarded only $50,000 to the winning team.
